Do the 2016 Nissan Frontier Standard Features Compare to a Ridgeline?

October 10th, 2016 by

2017 Honda Ridgeline AWDDrivers looking for a well-appointed pickup truck shouldn’t judge the class by the 2016 Nissan Frontier standard features. Lacking even the most common modern convenience features, the Frontier is practically barren, and when we put it up next to the 2017 Honda Ridgeline, Nissan’s truck had trouble looking competitive. It’s not just the features either; we took a quick look at the engine specs and fuel economy as well.

Honda Comes Out Ahead

While many automakers are equipping their vehicles with some of the latest in technology and connectivity amenities, one look at the 2016 Nissan Frontier standard features told us that they were aiming for basic. Nissan’s truck doesn’t have power windows or locks available on the entry-level S trim, let alone a rearview camera or Bluetooth connectivity.

Here’s a quick look at just a few of the features you’ll find on each Ridgeline—even the base RT trim—that are unavailable or require upgrades on the Frontier:

  • Bluetooth phone and audio
  • Multi-angle rearview camera with guidelines
  • Crew cab with seating for five and fold-up rear seat for extra cargo storage
  • In-bed lockable trunk with more than 7 cubic feet of storage space
  • Dual-action tailgate—it folds down and opens out at the side
  • Keyless entry

While the Frontier does have many comparable features, it requires drivers to upgrade the sparsely equipped S trim level or step up to one of the Frontier’s higher trims—and some of the issues aren’t fixable with a trim level upgrade. The in-bed trunk and dual-action tailgate are simply unavailable on the Nissan, and we haven’t even looked at the engines yet.

The 280-hp V6 of the 2017 Honda Ridgeline 2WD earns an EPA-estimated 26 highway mpg and 19 city mpg* while the Frontier’s 261-hp V6 manages just 22 highway and 17 city mpg. Features, fuel economy, and power—the Ridgeline simply comes out ahead.
