We have some exciting news for our Mid-Missouri truck fans: The 2017 Honda Ridgeline is the only pickup to be recognized with the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety’s 2017 Top Safety Pick+ award. When outfitted with the available Honda Sensing driver-assist technologies, the Ridgeline scores top marks in the IIHS safety evaluations, identifying it as a truly unique truck: one concerned just as much with safety as it is with performance.
Read on to see what it takes for a vehicle to earn Top Safety Pick+ and discover the safety features available on your next Ridgeline pickup truck.
What Are Honda Sensing Features?
If you haven’t heard the words “Honda Sensing” before reading this, that’s OK; this suite of driver-assistance features is pretty new. Available on select Honda vehicles, the Honda Sensing package includes advanced safety technologies that can help increase your awareness of the road to potentially avoid accidents.
The Ridgeline’s Honda Sensing features include:
- Forward Collision Warning
- Collision Mitigation Braking
- Lane Departure Warning
- Lane Keeping Assist
- Road Departure Mitigation
- Adaptive Cruise Control
There is no stand-in for driving safely, but Honda Sensing can help you drive a bit safer, using radar and camera technologies to alert you to possible accidents—and even applying the brakes or nudging the steering wheel when needed.
These features augment the already impressive selection of safety technologies on the Ridgeline, starting with its frame and the Advanced Compatibility Engineering (ACE) body structure and moving all the way up to the standard multi-angle rearview camera to help you safely back your truck up.
How to Earn Top Safety Pick+
Now that you know a bit about Honda Sensing, we should see just what it takes to earn a Top Safety Pick+ so you can see why no other truck stands next to the Ridgeline. For a vehicle to earn Top Safety Pick+, it must earn the highest score—a rating of “Good”— in all five IIHS crash tests:
- Moderate Overlap Front
- Small Overlap Front
- Roof Strength
- Side Impact
- Head Restraints and Seats
The vehicle also has to earn an “Advanced” or a “Superior” in frontal crash prevention and an “Acceptable” or a “Good” in a new headlight rating. The Ridgeline excels, with Honda Sensing models scoring “Good” in all five crash tests and the headlight rating and earning a “Superior” on frontal crash prevention.
